The Characteristics of Anionic Surfactants

Mar. 20, 2021

Anionic Surfactants dissolve and hydrolyze to produce surface active anions. Anionic surfactants are the most productive and the earliest developed among all types of surfactants. According to different hydrophilic groups, anionic surfactants can be divided into the following four categories: carboxylate type, sulfonate type, sulfate type, and phosphate type. Among the anionic surfactants, the sulfonate has the largest output and the most widely used, followed by sulfate.

Anionic Surfactants

Compared with other Surfactants, in addition to the difference in surface activity, anionic surfactants generally have the following characteristics:

① There is an obvious turning point in the change of solubility with temperature, that is, it rises very slowly with temperature in a lower temperature range. When the temperature rises to a certain value, its solubility increases rapidly with the rise of temperature. This temperature is called surfactant Kraft characteristics

② Under normal circumstances, it has poor compatibility with cationic surfactants, and it is easy to precipitate or become turbid, but under certain conditions, compounding with cationic surfactants can greatly improve surface activity

③ Poor resistance to hard water, sensitivity to hard water, carboxylate>phosphate>sulfate>sulfonate

④ Carboxylate is easy to precipitate free carboxylic acid in acid. Sulfate can undergo autocatalysis and rapidly decompose in acid. Other types of anionic surfactants are stable under normal conditions

⑤Anionic surfactants are important components of household detergents, industrial cleaning agents, dry cleaning agents and wetting agents.
